How much do you know about your ebike's throttle function?

Many ebikes support the optional throttle function, which gives your ebike three riding modes.
They are:
1. throttle mode also called electric mode
2. pedal assist mode also called PAS mode
3. human powered mode, also called cycling mode
(For a detailed description of the modes see the previous article on the description of the three riding modes)
The advantage of throttle mode is that you can drive the ebike while pedalling, which definitely minimises your physical exertion and adds some fun to the ride.
On the other hand, you can also control the riding rhythm and speed better.

Of course the throttle mode is not perfect, because in throttle mode, the power consumption is bound to be greater than PAS mode. Take a CEAYA Electric Bike AZ26 20AH electric bike battery for example:
Under test conditions (25 ℃, 70kg load, gentle road conditions, 3 levels of power assist, non-uniform speed), the range in throttle mode is about 55-60KM, while the maximum range in PAS mode is about 75-80KM.

The following are tips on using the throttle function
1. If you want to strike a balance between range and power in the throttle function, then we recommend you to set the power assist level (PAS) to 3 when you use it.
2. ebike's throttle function is recommended to be used only in gentle road conditions or when going uphill, but not when going downhill. Because the speed is too fast when you are going downhill, using the throttle will risk over speeding.

Then you may ask: Can I rely on ebike's throttle function to climb uphill directly?
The answer is no.
Please note:
The ebike with throttle is not an electric motorbike, so we can't rely entirely on the throttle function when going uphill. The role of the throttle function is to assist you to climb the hill, so you still need to press the pedals when climbing the hill.
As a matter of fact, the ebike's throttle function can only assist you in climbing hills, because of its limited power (the power of an electric motorbike is usually more than 2000W).
Although the ebike throttle function can drive the ebike to climb some gentle slopes, relying entirely on the throttle has relatively big disadvantages:
On the one hand, the slope is too high road conditions ebike may not be able to climb up, even if climbed up may also lead to motor overload overheating damage.
On the other hand, the wear and tear on the internal gears of the motor, long-term use will lead to a shorter service life.
More seriously: this kind of malfunction belongs to improper use leading to malfunction, i.e. man-made reasons, generally speaking, it is not covered by the warranty terms and conditions. Therefore, it is very important to use the throttle mode appropriately.

Of course, it should be noted that the problems mentioned in the article regarding hill climbing are related to the case where the original motor is a low-power motor, with the exception of the case where the motor is a modified high-power or comes with a high-power motor.
